Virtualisation

Pro This feature is available from the Pro edition.

SentryAssets reads hosts and virtual machines in the background at an interval of your choice (1 to 168 hours). A VM “runs on” the asset of its host.

System Access
Proxmox VE one node of the cluster, port 8006, API token of a user with the role PVEAuditor on / (read-only)
VMware vCenter 7.0 Update 2 or newer port 443, a user with the role “Read-only”; single ESXi hosts without vCenter lack the API needed
Hyper-V through the agent on the host: add the connection “Hyper-V through agent” once; the agent reads the guests through WMI, read-only, with what Windows brings along
  • Each connection is tested first, step by step in plain words, with the negotiated TLS version.
  • The certificate is always verified, against the hypervisor’s own CA if you add it (Proxmox pve-root-ca, vCenter VMCA).
  • TLS 1.3; vCenter before 8.0 Update 3 can only do TLS 1.2 and is then spoken to with ECDHE and AEAD only. The page recommends the TLS profile with 1.3.
  • Only networks the operator allows are reached (SA_HYPERVISOR_ALLOWED_NETWORKS, private networks by default).
  • Token secret and password are stored sealed and never shown. If kind, host, port or CA change, the secret must be entered again.
  • VMs match assets by the MAC addresses the hypervisor gave them.
  • A match by name alone, a host or an asset that is no VM is only offered.
  • Nothing reaches the inventory by itself: machines and hosts become assets in bulk with a proposed category; differing details such as vCPU, memory, operating system or the host after a move are taken over field by field.
