Protection inheritance

Pro This feature is available from the Pro edition.

A server running an important application needs at least that application’s protection requirement. SentryAssets derives this along the relations in the inventory, by the maximum principle of BSI Standard 200-2 (ch. 8.2): per security goal, the highest protection requirement of whatever depends on an object applies.

  • a host inherits from what runs on it (such as the server from its VMs and applications);
  • a provider inherits from what depends on it (such as the switch from the servers behind it);
  • a part inherits from its whole;
  • over several steps, per security goal (confidentiality, integrity, availability), with where each value comes from and the way there.

Two effects the standard names are taken into account with a reason:

  • Cumulation effect: many objects with normal protection requirements can together give a higher one, such as a host with many VMs.
  • Distribution effect: if an application is spread redundantly over several servers, a single server can have a lower protection requirement.

The page Protection inheritance shows the proposed and the current protection requirement per asset. You take proposals over deliberately, one at a time or up to 100 at once; “Undo” works through the inventory’s bulk editing. Nothing changes by itself.

An asset stands in the centre, its neighbours up to three steps away around it. Arrows show where protection is passed on; each box carries the colour of its protection requirement. A click or Enter makes another asset the centre. The page Dependencies leads there.

The results support your decision; the protection requirement is set by you.
